In English to separate the numbers from the thousands the comma is used, to separate the decimal figures the point is used.

Ordinal numbers are formed by adding the suffix th to the relative cardinal numbers, with some orthographic exception: the first, the second, the third, the twenty-first, the twenty-second, the twenty-third, etc.

Dates

In English the date is formulated using the ordinal number and can be named in two ways:

  • 7th May, 1995 it reads the seventh of May nineteen ninety-five
  • May 7th, 1995 it reads May the seventh nineteen ninety-five

The year never comes before the article and their numbers are read as a couple. If the second pair consists of two zeros, after reading the first pair, it is pronounced hundred, if instead it is formed by a figure less than ten, we pronounce hundred and the number is added.

Examples

  • 21st July 1900 is read the twenty – first of July nineteen hundred
  • 6th December 1905 reads the sixth of December nineteen hundred and five

ATTENTION: The year 2000 reads two thousand, the 2001 two thousand and one, etc …
